The world of health care is changing rapidly - are you equipped to survive?

Practice based commissioners are starting to reshape local services - developing new primary care based services. 

Many more providers can join the health care market place by competing for contracts, or through the "Any Willing Provider" approach.  This approach was promoted by the Department of Health in Practice Based Commissioning guidance released in December 2008.  It means that commissioners can agree contracts with many providers without activity or financial guarantees - contracts which have an agreed payment for every patient but no guarantees as to the volume of patients.

This is all leading to a more competitive market place for health care.   This can be exciting - lots of opportunities for entrepreneurs and innovators.  But it can be daunting for health professionals and health organisations that have traditionally worked in partnership with others to plan care in the local area.

You can no longer rely on your current income streams.  Whether you are a GP or a hospital consultant, a community nurse or a hospital manager, there is competition out there and it's keen to provide a service near you!

Don't put your head in the sand!  And it's no good resisting this tide of change - no government is likely to change this direction of travel.

Firstly - the most important thing is to be aware!  Know what is being offered in your area.  Without this knowledge you will miss opportunities. 

Secondly - make sure that when the opportunities arise you are ready to make the most of them.  Have any help you will need at hand - team up with others if you don't have all the skills "in house".
