You might be a therapist or a counsellor providing care to patients of a group of GPs in your area. Your income might come partly from the NHS and partly from private charges to patients. Or you might be providing nursing home care, alternative therapies, Chinese medicine or mobile diagnostics. New Health Service Contracts
Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) are being encouraged to use a "plurality" of providers - not just the NHS. This is good news for you if you run a business providing health care.
PCTs are also being encouraged to use a new approach - the "Any Willing Provider" approach. This means placing contracts for elective care with any organisation that can meet the required standards and offer the service at an agreed price. The contracts will not have any guarantees of patient numbers or annual income, they are "cost per case" contracts.
This means you agree what you will provide and how much it costs and then you just get on and deliver it. Of course you have to make sure patients are referred to you, which means ensuring local GPs have confidence in your service.
