"Established GPs prepare to feel the heat of big business" ran the headline in the Health Service Journal August 9 2007 - an article echoed in many of the GP magazines you receive regularly.

What does it mean for you?  Look what happened to the corner shops when big business started to compete with them.  But caring for patients is fundamentally different to providing standardised apples and carrots, isn't it?  Patients value the personal service they receive from their local general practice.  Patients like the continuity of care being offered.

This means you have a chance to survive - even thrive - in this new world of competition.  But the glorious days of having your allowances increased under the Red Book regulations because your list size had grown, or getting hold of premises money because the regulations stated you were entitled are over.

Equip yourself for this new world as best you can - keep informed of new opportunities and make sure you can get hold of the help you need quickly.
